The Electron Microscopy Unit at the Dept of Pathology, Ullevål Hospital performs ultrastructural examination of tissue biopsies from patients located in the health region which is under the administration of Ullevål Hospital. The EM-laboratory has its main focus on renal biopsies. The renal biopsies are precisely examined by our specialist in renal pathology, Erik Heyerdahl Strøm. We have developed techniques which makes it possible to perform immunoelectron microscopy for immunoglobulin antigens (IgG, IgM, IgA) and complement on epoxy embedded renal biopsies (see the reference list). We also examines tumors of different kinds, immotile ciliary syndrome, and biopsies from a variety of tissues. The laboratory is also focused on developing methods to improve the yield and quality of immunogold labeling of resin sections, especially epoxy sections (see the reference list). In the future we will also try to perform in situ hybridization at the ultrastructural level on resin section. Lately, in the rooms of the EM-laboratory PCR-techniques are being developed.
